If you are a small business owner you have probably received more than a few phone calls from salespeople that guarantee you top rankings in Google.

They sound so professional and convincing, and above all, who doesn’t want top search engine rankings.

Well, before you fork over hundreds of your hard earned cash you need to read this direct quote from Google:

“No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.”

I have been doing SEO for 15 years and have never guaranteed anyone top listings. Yes, I usually get top rankings but to guarantee someone, is misleading and in my opinion very unprofessional. They charge you a high  monthly fee for guaranteed traffic for specific keywords and end up spending only a small portion of your overall budget toward the click-through fees from sponsored listings. In many cases they are not even targeting the right keywords for your business. In fact, you could probably do your own Pay Per Click for far less than they are charging.

The Third and most common misleading guarantee is the performance based, money back guarantee. This includes a guarantee that a certain percentage of your keywords will receive top rankings within the major search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Wow, this is too good to be true! Then you find out that buried deep in the contract that the list of search engines include five to twenty small and outdated, and barely used search engines.

You do not have to be an expert to rank high in these insignificant searh engines that garner little, if any traffic.  In fact, they will talk alot about top rankings in Google but the contract is very vague and many times your website won’t even show up in google. A good way to shut them up is to have them put in writing top rankings in Google and listen to what they say.

My words of advice to all small business owners is that when you receive these types of sales pitches, hang up the phone. No true professional will ever guarantee you top rankings in Google no matter how many years they have been in the business.
