Is Your Business Too Small For A Website?

Websites are not just for the big companies!

I recently had a conversation with a small business owner here in Phoenix about Internet Marketing.

Now, let me begin by saying that he is a one man show. He has no employees and is in the service industry with a truck and his tools.

When we started talking about how he attracts new customers, he said that it has been getting tougher all the time to reach people. As a long time Yellow Page user he no longer gets the phone calls he used to. This is understandable because very few people rely on the Yellow Pages anymore to find local businesses.

He is getting a few calls from CraigsList, but it is really hard to post everyday and keep his ads on top of the listings.

Eventually I asked the big question. “Do you have a website?”

He said no. I asked him why not.

A little guy like me can’t compete with the big guys with the fancy websites. Plus, websites are too expensive and I am on a tight budget.

Let me address the misnomer that you are too small for a website right now, because there are many small business owners that feel the same way.

Your website can compete with the big guys online!

In the old days the big guys could easily outspend the smaller businesses by buying huge ads in the newspaper, big ads in the Yellow Pages, and they in turn attracted more customers. Anyone in business knows that you must advertise to attract new customers. The key is to spend it wisely.

As more small businesses are switching their advertising dollars to online marketing it is becoming more competitive then ever.

You need to have a well designed and search engine friendly website to compete. Sure, the big guys can outspend you with Pay Per Click (Google adwords). The dirty little secret is,  PPC ads are getting fewer and fewer clicks then ever before and the numbers have been slipping every year. Some statistics are saying that pay per click ads only get about 1-2% of the clicks.

This is great news for the small business owner!

If you can get your website to show up on page one of the Google organic (free) results you will get more clicks then the big guys spending thousands on pay per click. The fact is, most searchers now know that the PPC results are ads and are looking down the page for natural results.

If you are a small business owner that is still without a website you are losing customers. It is important to understand that just hiring a website designer to build you a website means nothing if the website is not optimized for the keywords people are typing in to Google to find your products or services.

A good website design company should design a search engine friendly website focusing on the right keywords. They should also work on getting you back links to your website and help you get your business up in the local directories and search engine local results.

Before you fork over big bucks for a website make sure you know exactly what you’re getting. Internet marketing is a process not a one time event. You need to be prepared to pay a specialist on a monthly basis to market your website.

Does Google Hate Your Small Business?

Okay, Google doesn’t really hate your Small Business!

If you are a small business owner and have a website you may be frustrated because you don’t show up in the top rankings of the Google results. Even worse, you may not even be showing up in Google at all.

Did you hire a website design company or a website design Internet marketing company? Chances are you paid a website designer to build you a nice website and then assumed your website would magically appear in the Google results. Unfortunately, most website designers do not optimize your website for the right keywords, or in may cases do not optimize your website at all. Are your primary keywords in the title tag, H tags and lightly scattered throughout the text on your page? Is each web page optimized for a different set of keywords?

When was the last time you updated or added fresh content to your website? Has it been days, weeks, months, years? Google, now more than ever is looking for fresh content and most small business websites have been showing the same stale content for years.

Does anyone link to your website? Google also looks at the number of websites that are linking back to your website. Google likes websites with lots of back links. They view your site as more credible for the specific keywords or topic your business is all about. Better yet, does the link back to your site have your keywords in the anchor text?

Is your small business local? If you want to show up in the local result searches you need to let Google know where you are. Is your address and phone number on every page of your website? If it is an image, Google does not read text on images. It cannot read your address and phone number unless it is readable text. Are you combining your primary keywords with local identifiers? If you are a plumber that works in the Phoenix area and your main keywords are emergency plumbers, your keywords might be “emergency plumbers in Phoenix”.

Keep in mind many local searchers type in a city or zip code to narrow down their searches. Make sure your web pages are locally focused.

Interesting stuff!

Google is a search engine and their goal is to provide searchers with what they think are the most relevant results. But, even if you think your website is very relevant if it is not set up properly, nobody is paying attention to it (back links) and if your content hasn’t been updated for months or years the Google spider will ignore it.

Remember, Google is a huge index that is monitored by spiders not humans. These Google spiders are given a set of rules by the Google engineers. If your website adheres to these rules your chances are very good that you will get Google love!

Unless you are a search engine expert it is highly advisable that you hire a professional to redesign your website and maintain it on a monthly basis. This ensures that your website will be in a better position to show up on the top page of Google when people are looking for your type of business.
